Le dos courbé, les mains pleines de crasse,
Celle qui bégaie devant l’olympe,
A qui on répète que c’est pas si simple,
Celle qui est triviale, dure à la peine,
Celle qui s’endette et puis celle qui se saigne,

Des flics ont détruit le portrait de Marcel,
Et si la France de Marcel allait saccager, démonter la tour Eiffel ?
Celle des derniers de cordée qui choisit ses symboles,
Et qui prend ses gueules cassées pour poser une auréole,
Pour poser son auréole.

Some cops dismantled the portrait of Marcel,
Mangled his (yellow) vest, his face, his wrinkles and frostbitten skin.
Along with him a France, not the well-spoken one,
With crooked teeth, if any left,
The one from industrial sites,
The one rummaging through your trash.

The one ashamed, the one wincing,
Task-arched back, dirt and grime covered hands,
Stuttering down Mount Olympus,
Constantly told it is "not that simple",
The trivial one, the extra miles,
Getting into debt to contract a loan again,
(The one that kicked down the doors)
(The one that did pave the way)
Now speaking for itself.

Some cops dismantled the portrait of Marcel,
What if Marcel’s France would go and ransack, unbolt the Eiffel Tower ?
A sewage-labor-force choosing its own symbols,
Selecting some gueules cassées* to crown them with a halo,
To put its own halo crown.

The one ashamed, the one wincing,
Task-arched back, dirt and grime covered hands,
Stuttering down Mount Olympus,
Constantly told it is "not that simple",
The trivial one, the extra miles,

* an expression for facially disfigured soldiers which originated in WW1. Here designating someone whose body and face are conspicuously marked by the lack of money, social pressure, manual and physical labor.
